Working as a Project Electrical Engineer, you will be the authority/support person for various engineering projects in Ports Service, Process Automation Marine & Ports (PAMP) in Charleston, South Carolina, providing technical details, costs and deliverables for sales proposals. You will be the design authority for electrical system engineering with medium complexity within the container crane and container terminal environment. Complete assignments on multiple projects of moderate size or portions of major projects, cost effectively and in accordance with contract specifications, quality standards and safety requirements.

Your responsibilities

  • Technical contribution: Ensures that engineering is developed with complete information. Optimizes designs to meet updated standards, incorporating new products, components and functionalities. Creates and reviews engineering drawings, specifications and plans required by manufacturing, fabrication or construction. Evaluates, selects and adapts standard techniques, procedures and criteria to perform tasks for projects with moderately complex features
  • Coordinates engineering discipline across several projects. Designs and conducts experiments, analyzes and interprets data. Prepares complete project documents in one's area of responsibility. Serves as a specialist in application of advanced concepts and methods
  • Provides technical support for testing, installation, commissioning and start up activities, clarifying potential issues or providing solutions to correct engineering errors
  • Sales support: Assists in preparing proposal/presentation of engineering projects/programs (provision of bills of materials, estimated engineering hours, etc)
  • Contract management: Supports Contract Managers in issuing claims (new/change in scope of work, cost impact, time impact, risk quantifications etc.). Provides cost effective quality solutions as per customer requirement and delivers within budget and contract. Ensures adherence to safety standards and mitigation of potential risks
  • Planning and control: Creates work plans, defines project tasks and cost estimates in one's area of responsibility. Reviews and approves scope, budget and schedule for assignments and ensures quality deliverables on time and within targeted cost. Improves effectiveness of work plan in collaboration with other functions
  • Risk and opportunity management: Completes risk and opportunity assessments and ensures implementation of resulting actions in one's area of responsibility. Reports any contract / quality / program / cost issues to management along with recommendations for resolution
  • Customer: Works with customers, contractors and others to shape and deliver solutions, seeking feedback and innovating to deliver improvements. Attends project meetings and presents all technical aspects of project assignments
  • Supply chain management: Collaborates with the Supply Chain function to ensure that technical requirements for equipment or services are communicated and agreed to with potential suppliers. Provides technical evaluation of supplier proposals and accepts as fit for purpose supplied equipment or services
  • Technical leadership and knowledge sharing: Shares knowledge, engineering best practices and experience across own business unit and beyond. Attends project meetings and presents specific aspects of project design assignments
  • Processes and tools: Develops, selects and applies standard techniques, procedures and tools. Ensures that engineering activities comply with required safety regulations and contractual requirements. Reports processes and tools inefficiencies and suggests ideas for improvements
  • People leadership and development: Coaches, provides support and technical advice to colleagues. Assigns tasks for and directs engineers, technicians and administrative staff. May functionally lead a small team
Your background

  • Bachelor's Degree in electrical engineering or related field and minimum 4 years of experience
  • Looking for a broad range of expertise to support projects upgrading, repairing and adding new features within the container crane and port terminal market including: power systems; drive & control panel design; low voltage drives; PLC programming; and field/commissioning support
  • Providing recommendations and assisting organizations with upgrading their electrical systems and/or automation systems
  • Integration of energy storage systems into equipment modernization projects
  • Preparing cost estimates and bid proposals
  • Overseeing the quality aspects and technical support for electrical engineering projects for port terminals
  • Creating or supporting the project team during the development of project plans, overseeing resource allocation and financial profiles for projects
  • Supporting start up, troubleshooting and commissioning activities
  • Candidates must already have a work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US
